Cognac est située sur les rives de la Charente en aval d' Angoulême (38 km) et Jarnac (12 km ), en amont de Saintes (25 km ). Elle s'est principalement développée sur la rive gauche. Sur la rive droite se trouve le faubourg Saint-Jacques et le quartier de Crouin (qui constituait une commune séparée jusqu'en 1867).
