Although named after Isaac Ellwood, one of the inventors of barbed wire, the town was designed by Henry Hartman, an industrialist from Beaver Falls. Before its creation, much of what would become Ellwood was fields and farms, although the town of Hazel Dell, what is now known as the North Side neighborhood, already existed.
Lieutenant Colonel Tobias Martin Ellwood VR (born 12 August 1966) is a British Conservative Party politician and soldier who has been the Member of Parliament (MP) for Bournemouth East since 2005. He chaired the Defence Select Committee from 2020 to 2023, and was Minister for Defence Veterans, Reserves and Personnel at the Ministry of Defence from 2017 to 2019.
