The VIAF® (Virtual International Authority File) combines multiple name authority files into a single OCLC-hosted name authority service. The goal of the service is to lower the cost and increase the utility of library authority files by matching and linking widely-used authority files and making that information available on the Web.

The VIAF (Virtual International Authority File) service provides libraries and library users with convenient access to the world’s major name authority files. VIAF Contributors regularly supply authority data that VIAF matches, links, and groups.
It is built around use of the Virtual International Authority File (VIAF), an international project to merge multiple national authority files into a single master system. VIAF identifiers correspond to identifiers in other systems, and can be used in parallel with, or instead of, these other identifiers.
Why use VIAF and not another identifier? VIAF is a composite of several existing authority control databases, and so includes all the content from many of the other systems. Any entity with, for example, a LCCN should have a corresponding VIAF number as well, but not every entity with a VIAF number will have an LCCN.
