Laxenburg castles are imperial palaces and castles outside Vienna, in the town of Laxenburg owned in equal parts by Vienna and Lower Austria. The castles became a Habsburg possession in 1333 and formerly served as a summer retreat, along with Schönbrunn palace, for the imperial Habsburg dynasty.
Laxenburg is situated about 15 km south of Vienna. The historical importance of the village “Lachsendorf” has its roots in the 13th century and it was already in 1388 under the reign of duke Albrecht III that Laxenburg became a “Marktgemeinde” (a special kind of village in Austria).
Laxenburg Castle Park, with its extensive parkland, is one of the most important historic landscape gardens in Europe. Apart from numerous memorials, follies, natural monuments, and picturesque garden spaces, the castle park is majestically crowned by the Franzensburg. The Franzensburg is also called "Austria's little treasure house".
