    Según Allen, la idea de Manhattan se origina de su amor por la música de George Gershwin.     Isaac Davis (Allen), de más de cuarenta años de edad, es escritor de chistes para la televisión. Tras conocer dos fracasos matrimoniales, mantiene una relación con una joven de diecisiete años llamada Tracy (Mariel Hemingway), pero se enamora de Mary Wilkie(Diane Keaton), amante de su mejor amigo, Yale (Michael Murphy). Su última esposa (Meryl Streep) tiene ahora una relación de pareja con una mujer, y está a punto de publicar un libro con todo tipo de detalles sobre la vida sexual de Isaac.

Ganó en total 485.734 dólares (16.749 por pantalla) en su fin de semana de abertura, y un total de 39.9 millones de dólares en su funcionamiento entero.[5]​ Fue aclamada tanto por el público como por la crítica, posiblemente porque hasta cierto punto evocaba la cinta Annie Hall, dado que es la historia de un romance conflictivo narrada con mucho ingenio.[6]​ El guion, original de Woody Allen y Marshall Brickman, fue traducido al español por José Luis Guarner, publicado por Tusquets en 1981y reeditado posteriormente.
