Tarja Halonen (born December 24, 1943, Helsinki, Finland) Finnish politician who served as president of Finland (2000–12), the first woman elected to that office. As a student at the University of Helsinki, Halonen served (1969–70) as social affairs secretary and general secretary of the National Union of Finnish Students.

[1] The result was a victory for Tarja Halonen of the Social Democratic Party, who became the country's first female president. During the elections Halonen was the incumbent Minister for Foreign Affairs.
Born 24.12.1943 in Helsinki. Tarja Halonen was the 11th President of the Republic of Finland 2000-2012 and Finland’s first female head of state. She acceded office on 1 March 2000, and was re-elected in 2006. She graduated from the University of Helsinki in 1968 and has a Master of Law degree.
