19 de oct. de 2023 · Fossils are the preserved remains, or traces of remains, of ancient organisms. Fossils are not the remains of the organism itself! They are rocks. A fossil can preserve an entire organism or just part of one. Bones, shells, feathers, and leaves can all become fossils.

A fossil is the preserved evidence of an organism that lived in the distant past. Some fossils are formed from body parts, such as shells or bones. Others, such as preserved footprints, are from traces of an organism’s behaviors. Fossils are usually found in sedimentary rock.

Fossils are the preserved remains of plants and animals whose bodies were buried in sediments, such as sand and mud, under ancient seas, lakes and rivers. Fossils also include any preserved trace of life that is typically more than 10 000 years old.
