The Handbook of the Birds of the World series illustrates and describes in detail every species of bird in the world. This collection comprises 16 volumes plus a Special volume that complements them.
The Handbook of the Birds of the World (HBW) is a multi-volume series produced by the Spanish publishing house Lynx Edicions in partnership with BirdLife International. It is the first handbook to cover every known living species of bird. The series was edited by Josep del Hoyo, Andrew Elliott, Jordi Sargatal and David A. Christie.

This is the emblematic first volume of the series, published in 1992. It features a Foreword by Christoph Imboden, presenting the project. There is also a 38-page introductory article, providing a complete general description of the biology of birds.
