4 de oct. de 2017 · Learn how the Moon's orbit and rotation create the different phases we see from Earth. See a chart and a simulation of the Moon's appearance throughout 2018.
The Moon can be seen in the daylit sky at any phase except for the new moon, when it’s invisible to us, and full moon, when it’s below the horizon during the day. The crescent through quarter phases are high in the sky during the day, but the daytime gibbous phases can be glimpsed only just before the Sun sets.
The Moon has eight phases in a lunar month: four primary and four intermediate phases. A Moon cycle, or a lunation, is the time the Moon travels through its lunar phases. ©timeanddate.com
The eight lunar phases are, in order: new moon, waxing crescent, first quarter, waxing gibbous, full moon, waning gibbous, third quarter and waning crescent. The cycle repeats once a month (every 29.5 days).
30 de ago. de 2023 · Let’s explore the science behind the Moon’s phases, each of their unique characteristics, and the critical role the Moon plays in lunar and solar eclipses. Why does the Moon have phases?
There are four principal (primary, or major) lunar phases: the new moon, first quarter, full moon, and last quarter (also known as third or final quarter), when the Moon's ecliptic longitude is at an angle to the Sun (as viewed from the center of the Earth) of 0°, 90°, 180°, and 270° respectively.
