Sequoyah was born in 1770 in present-day Tennessee to a Cherokee-Scots-Irish family and spoke Cherokee and English.

Today, three Cherokee tribes are federally recognized: the United Keetoowah Band of Cherokee Indians (UKB) in Oklahoma, the Cherokee Nation (CN) in Oklahoma, and the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians (EBCI) in North Carolina.
The Cherokee are members of the Iroquoian language -family of North American indigenous peoples, and are believed to have migrated in ancient times from the Great Lakes area, where most of such language families were located. The migration is recounted in their oral history.
Sequoyah was one of the most famous Cherokee Indians and the only Native American to conceive and perfect an entire alphabet.
