Glass fiber is a material consisting of numerous extremely fine fibers of glass. Glass fiber has roughly comparable mechanical properties to other fibers such as polymers and carbon fiber. Although not as rigid as carbon fiber, it is much cheaper and significantly less brittle when used in composites.
The main constituent of glass fibre is silica (Silicon dioxide). The raw material for silica is sand or sandstone. Glass is highly amorphous in nature due to heavy networking in its chemical structure.

SiO 2 is also the basic element in quartz, a naturally occurring rock. Quartz, however, is crystalline (rigid, highly ordered atomic structure) and is 99% or more SiO 2.
