Hace 1 día · Archaeologists have finally uncovered the full extent of the Temple of Poseidon at Samikon in the Western Peloponnese, Greece. The temple complex is significantly larger than expected, measuring approximately 28 meters long (91.8 ft) and nearly 9.5 meters (31.1 ft) wide, adding new depth to a find first made two years ago.

The Archaic temple of Poseidon at Cape Sounion was constructed to cornice level before the Persian sack of the sanctuary, afterward remaining a ruin until the Classical temple replaced it.

Our current reconstruction is based on the most recent archaeological studies, site surveys and plan elevations of the temple, the propylaea, stoas and defensive wall. The reconstruction will be revised and up-dated when new studies can reveal more accurate data on currently uncertain elements of the architecture.

The walls and stylobates of the temple were removed in three episodes: the first followed the fire that destroyed the building between ca. 460 and 450 b.c.9 when the Classical Temple was built on the same site; the second during rebuilding of the Classical Temple following another fire in 390 b.c.;
