Shot documentary-style, this film follows the daily grind of two young police officers in LA who are partners and friends and what happens when they meet criminal forces greater than themselves.
The officers involved, Brian Taylor (Jake Gyllenhaal) and Miguel Zavala (Michael Peria), are close friends and partners in the LAPD. Taylor, a former Marine, is filming their police activities for a film project, much to his fellow officers' chagrin. Later, the officers respond to a public disturbance call.
"End of Watch" offers an intense look at the life of L.A.'s finest and a harrowing portrait of life in the barrios and gang-ridden parts of L.A. Although exaggerated at crucial points, it shows what can happen when officers try and step out of their clearance level.
In law enforcement, "end of watch" has two meanings. It commonly refers to the end of a police officer's shift. (Some agencies call shifts "watches".) It can also refer to the date of an officer's death if he is killed in the line of duty.

Nerve-rattling in the best way, the sharp, visceral urban police procedural End of Watch is one of the best American cop movies I've seen in a long time. Ultimately, the mock-doc device works because Gyllenhaal and Pena so completely reinvent themselves in-character.
