Æthelred Mucel was an Anglo-Saxon noble from Mercia who was the father of Ealhswith, the wife of Alfred the Great. Æthelred witnessed several charters between 867 and 895; he may be the same man as an ealdorman called 'Mucel' who witnessed Mercian charters between 836 and 866.

Aethelred Mucel Ealdorman of Gaini Mercia was born in 0825, in Gainsborough, Lincolnshire, England. He married Edburga of Mercia. They were the parents of at least 1 son and 2 daughters. He died in 0866, in Lincolnshire, England, at the age of 41, and was buried in Sherborne, Dorset, England.
Æthelflæd was born around 870, the oldest child of King Alfred the Great and his Mercian wife, Ealhswith, who was a daughter of Æthelred Mucel, ealdorman of the Gaini, one of the tribes of Mercia. Ealhswith's mother, Eadburh, was a member of the Mercian royal house, probably a descendant of King Coenwulf (796–821).
Gaini. The Gaini were an Anglo-Saxon tribe which occupied part of the kingdom of Mercia. [1] The Gaini are only recorded in Asser 's life of King Alfred the Great, written in 893, which stated that in 868, before he became king, Alfred married Ealhswith, daughter of Æthelred, known as Mucel, ealdorman of the Gaini.
