Švitrigaila (Polish: Świdrygiełło; cca 1373 – 10 February 1452) was the Grand Duke of Lithuania from 1430 to 1432. He spent most of his life in largely unsuccessful dynastic struggles against his cousins Vytautas and Sigismund Kęstutaitis .
It examines how Švitrigaila secured his position, sought through marriage to found his own dynasty that might threaten the position of Jagiełło’s sons, and brought the union state to the brink of civil war.
Švitrigaila's reign was characterized by his attempts to assert independence from Polish influence, which was a continuation of the policies of his predecessor, Vytautas, who had worked extensively to expand and strengthen the Grand Duchy.
