Hace 16 horas · The transition from Gothic to Renaissance architecture coincides with the construction of the dome of the Florence Cathedral, carried out by Filippo Brunelleschi between 1420 and 1436. The Cathedral, built by Arnolfo di Cambio, was left unfinished by the end of the 14th century; it had a huge hole at the centre, where the dome was meant to be.

Hace 4 días · The Close was described as a castellum c. 1200, and by the 14th century the mill in Dam Street on the south side of the Close was known as Castle mill. Two gates were recorded in the early 1290s. One was presumably at the south-east corner guarding the approach from the town over Minster Pool dam.

The houses are either two-story or single-story, with spacious courtyards and covered balconies. Particularly interesting is the Church of the Archangels, dating from the late 13th to early 14th century.
