Hace 6 días · Juan Ponce de León claimed Florida for Spain in 1513. In 1512 Juan Ponce de León, governor of Puerto Rico, received royal permission to search for land north of Cuba. On March 3, 1513, his expedition departed from Punta Aguada, Puerto Rico, sailing north in three ships.

A dubious legend states that Ponce de León was searching for the Fountain of Youth on the island of Bimini, based on information from natives.
