He set out from Coatzacoalcos (renamed Espíritu Santo by the Spanish), on the coast of the Gulf of Mexico. His party followed the Grijalva upriver; near modern Chiapa de Corzo the Spanish party fought and defeated the Chiapanecos.

He was the eldest son of Ismail I and his principal consort, Tajlu Khanum . Tahmasp ascended the throne after the death of his father on 23 May 1524.
