Yellowstone Lake is one of the largest high-elevation lakes in North America and is centered over the Yellowstone Caldera, the largest super volcano on the continent. The caldera is considered a dormant volcano.

Albert Charles Peale, a member of the Hayden expeditions, produced thermal water analyses that were published in 1883—more than twenty years prior to the development of the pH scale!
