Hace 2 días · James Hepburn, 4th Earl of Bothwell. Mary's marriage to a leading Catholic precipitated Mary's half-brother, the Earl of Moray, to join with other Protestant lords, including Lords Argyll and Glencairn, in open rebellion. Mary set out from Edinburgh on 26 August 1565 to confront them.

Hace 4 días · Opposition to her third husband James Hepburn, 4th Earl of Bothwell, led to the formation of a coalition of nobles, who captured Mary and forced her abdication in favour of her son, who came to the throne as James VI in 1567. James was brought up Protestant, but resisted Presbyterianism and the independence of the Kirk.
Hace 5 días · 1578 - James Hepburn, 1st Duke of Orkney and 4th Earl of Bothwell, died aged forty-four at Dragsholm Castle after being imprisoned and held in appalling conditions by Frederick, King of Denmark. It is said that the imprisonment caused Bothwell to go insane. Bothwell was the third husband of Mary, Queen of Scots. See video below.
Hace 3 días · Five years after returning to Scotland she married her half-cousin, Lord Darnley. The couple had a son, James, born a year later. Eight months after the birth, Darnley was murdered. In May 1567, Mary married again. However, by 1568 her new husband Earl of Bothwell was exiled and Mary forced to flee south to England.
