Marjayya Leadership of Abd al-A’la al-Sabziwari and the Successor of Sistani. After the death of Marja Abu al-Qasim Khoei, Abd al-A’la al-Sabziwari (1910-1993) took over in his place. He was a source of emulation for many Shiites in the Shiite community in Iraq, Iran and elsewhere. But he passed away months after Khoei’s death.
Sayyid 'Abd al-A'la Sabziwari passed away in Najaf on Monday, Safar 27, 1414 / August 16, 1993, in the eve of the demise of the Prophet (s) and the martyrdom of Imam al-Hasan al-Mujtaba (a). Some believe that he was poisoned and martyred by Ba'ath regime.

The only major scholar alive in Najaf at that time was Sayyid Abd al-A’la al-Sabziwari (1910-93), who passed away a year after al-Khoei. From 1993, Sistani took on the role of grand marj’a of Najaf.

The current situation in Najaf is similar to the situation before the death of Abu al-Qasim al-Khoei in 1992 when Abd al-A’la al-Sabziwari succeeded him in 1993. He was elected by a broad spectrum of Shiites in Iraq and Iran.
Grand Ayatollah Sayyid Abd al-A'la al-Musawi al-Sabziwari was an Iranian-Iraqi Shia marja'. He is regarded as one of the most influential grand religious authorities and he was a contemporary of Abu al-Qasim al-Khoei.
