James Young (15 November 1717 – 24 January 1789) was an officer of the Royal Navy who saw service during the War of the Austrian Succession, the Seven Years' War and the American War of Independence, rising to the rank of admiral of the white.
Admiral William Lloyd was from Carmarthenshire, Wales and became an Admiral of the White for the Royal Navy. He sailed Governor Edward Cornwallis aboard HMS Sphinx to establish Halifax, Nova Scotia (1749).
So the white squadron was commanded by an admiral of the White, with a vice admiral of the White and a rear admiral of the White as his second and third in command. The squadrons ranked in the order red, white, blue, and admirals took rank according to the colour of their squadron.
