Anna of Holstein-Gottorp (27 February 1575 – 24 April 1610) was a German noblewoman, member of the House of Holstein-Gottorp by birth and House of Hesse by marriage. Early life [ edit ] Anna was born as the seventh child and fourth daughter of Duke Adolf of Holstein-Gottorp and his wife, Landgravine Christine of Hesse (daughter of Landgrave Philip I of Hesse ).

The dynastic name Holstein-Gottorp comes as convenient usage from the technically more correct Duke of Schleswig and Holstein at Gottorp. Adolf, the third son of Duke and King Frederick I and the second youngest half-brother of King Christian III , founded the dynastic branch called House of Holstein-Gottorp , which is a cadet branch of the then royal Danish House of Oldenburg .
Adolf Frederick had recently become the guardian of Charles Peter Ulrich, the eleven-year-old orphaned duke of Holstein-Gottorp and only living grandchild of Emperor Peter the Great of Russia (1672–1725), who was a prospective heir to both the Russian Empire and the Kingdom of Sweden.
