In June 1867 he joined the Galatea, screw frigate, commanded by Captain the Duke of Edinburgh, and in March 1872 was appointed Flag Lieutenant to Admiral Sir Rodney Mundy, Commander-in-Chief, Portsmouth.

George Edward Archibald Augustus FitzGeorge Hamilton was the only son of Sir Archibald Hamilton, 5th Baronet, and his first wife, Olga FitzGeorge, the only daughter and child of Rear Admiral Sir Adolphus FitzGeorge and his first wife, Sophia Jane Holden. He was the heir to the Hamilton baronetcies of Trebinshun House and Marlborough House.
