D'origine champenoise, Adrienne Couvreur, dite Adrienne Lecouvreur, débute à Paris par hasard, sur un théâtre de société, dans Pauline (Polyeucte). Remarquée, dit-on, par l'auteur-acteur Marc-Antoine Le Grand, qui lui donne des leçons, elle joue en province, à la cour du duc de Lorraine et à Strasbourg.
