Earl of Galloway is a title in the Peerage of Scotland. It was created in 1623 for Alexander Stewart, 1st Lord Garlies, with remainder to his heirs male bearing the name and arms of Stewart. He had already been created Lord Garlies in the Peerage of Scotland in 1607, with remainder to the heirs male of his body succeeding to the estates of Garlies.

Alan, Lord of Galloway. Alan FitzRoland ( c. 1175 & ndash; 1234) was the last of the MacFergus dynasty of quasi - independent Lords of Galloway. He was also hereditary Constable of Scotland. Family. He was the son of Roland, or Lochlann, Lord of Galloway and Helen de Morville. His date of birth is uncertain, but he was considered an adult in 1196.
In 1228 Alan married a daughter of Hugh de Lacy of Scotland, by whom he had no issue. Scots Peerage Volume 4 states- Alan, son of Roland, succeeded his father as Constable, and also in the lordship of Galloway, with his other large domains in Scotland and England. he is first named in 1196 in connection with lands at Teinford, co. Northampton, which apparently he held apart from his father.
