Altdorfer fue un pintor célebre que recibió importantes comisiones a lo largo de su vida. Trabajó para Maximiliano I, y su obra más importante, La batalla de Alejandro , conservada en Múnich en la Alte Pinakothek, fue ejecutada en 1529 por encargo del conde Guillermo IV de Baviera.
