DUFF, ALEXANDER, D.D., LL.D. (1806–1878), missionary, was born at Auchnahyle in the parish of Moulin, Perthshire, 26 April 1806. In his boyhood he came under deep religious impressions, and in his course of study in arts and theology at the university of St. Andrews was much influenced by Chalmers, then professor of moral philosophy.

Alexander William George Duff, 1. Duke of Fife, KG, KT, GCVO, PC (* 10. November 1849 in Edinburgh; † 29. Januar 1912 in Assuan) war ein schottisch-britischer Adliger und Politiker. Er war der Ehemann von Prinzessin Louise, der ältesten Tochter des späteren König Eduard VII.
Duff (1806–1878) was the first foreign missionary of the Church of Scotland and a leading figure in promoting Christian education in India. Duff pioneered what he called 'downward filter theory' which centred on educating India's upper caste through English in the hope that this elite group would then take responsibility for the evangelisation and modernisation of South Asia.
