Five years later, on 10 December 1599, Jean married her third and last husband, Alexander Ogilvy of Boyne, the widower of Mary Beaton, one of Queen Mary's celebrated quartet of ladies-in-waiting who had died in 1598. He was the only man Jean had ever truly loved, as her two previous marriages had been made for political reasons.

Sir George Ogilvy of Dunlugas built the castle in the late 16th century. Occupation continued until after 1723. [2] Charles McKean suggested that building was slightly earlier, constructed by Alexander Ogilvy of Boyne before 1575 for his bride, Mary Beaton, a companion of Mary, Queen of Scots, brought up at the French royal court. [3]

In 1566 she married Alexander Ogilvy and a copy of the contract dated 3 May has survived. In it, the parties of the first part are the queen, acting with the consent of the king (Darnley), Mary and her father while those of the second part are Ogilvy and his friends.
