She was a powerful and outspoken woman, whose surviving letters contain much interesting comment on Medici family history. Her position depended in effect on her son, Lorenzo, Duke of Urbino, whom Leo intended to be the ruler of Florence, but who died in 1519 after being much outside Rome and Florence for political reasons.
