2014 sculpture by Sergey Bondarenko. Algirdas was the son of Grand Duke Gediminas of Lithuania and his second wife Olga, the daughter of Prince Vsevolod of Smolensk. He was born in 1296 in Kernavė. In 1318 Algirdas married Maria, the daughter of Prince Yaroslav Vasilkovich of Vitebsk, who had no sons and received his new son-in-law in Vitebsk.

Diplomatiniuose aktuose ir kronikose vadinamas ir karaliumi. 1345 su jaunesniuoju broliu Kęstučiu atėmė valdžią iš jauniausiojo brolio, didžiojo kunigaikščio Jaunučio ir tapo didžiuoju kunigaikščiu.
23 de may. de 2022 · Algirdas was one of the seven sons of the Grand Duke Gediminas. Before his death in 1341 Gediminas divided his domains, leaving the youngest son Jaunutis in possession of the capital Vilnius, with a nominal priority. With the aid of his brother Kęstutis, Algirdas drove out the incapable Jaunutis and declared himself a Grand Prince in 1345.
Algirdas mirė 1377 m. Mirusio kunigaikščio palaikai, pagal pagonių papročius, buvo sudeginti. Pasak Jano Dlugošo, Algirdas „buvo sudegintas miške Kokiveithus netoli Maišiagalos pilies ir kaimo (castrum et villa)” [3], „kartu su puikiausiu žirgu, uždengtu perlais ir brangakmeniais atausta gūnia, apvilktas aukso apvadais ...
Algirdas ( 1296 m. vasario 11 d. – 1377 m. gegužės 24 d.) – Lietuvos didysis kunigaikštis ( 1345 - 1377 m.), Vitebsko kunigaikštis (apie 1318- 1345 ). Gedimino sūnus. Buvo du kartus vedęs, turėjo kelias dukteris ir sūnus, iš kurių žinomiausi yra Jogaila, Skirgaila ir Švitrigaila. Kitos reikšmės – Algirdas (reikšmės).
