The grand duchy originally formed from the Landgraviate of Hesse-Darmstadt in 1806 as the Grand Duchy of Hesse (German: Großherzogtum Hessen).

Prince Henry Victor Louis Frederick of Prussia (German: Heinrich Viktor Ludwig Friedrich; 9 January 1900 – 26 February 1904), was the haemophiliac third son and youngest child of Prince Henry of Prussia and Princess Irene of Hesse and by Rhine, and thus a grandson of Frederick III, German Emperor, on his father's side and a great-grandson of Queen Victoria through both his mother and father.
Hace 4 días · Alexander Alexandrovich was heir apparent to the Russian throne as the second but eldest surviving son of Emperor Alexander II and Empress Maria Alexandrovna (née Princess Marie of Hesse and by Rhine). Maria Feodorovna was the daughter of King Christian IX and Queen Louise of Denmark.

Originally Princess Alix of Hesse and by Rhine at birth, she was given the name and patronymic Alexandra Feodorovna upon being received into the Russian Orthodox Church and—having been killed along with her immediate family while in Bolshevik captivity in 1918—was canonized in 2000 as Saint Alexandra the Passion Bearer.
4 de may. de 2024 · Alix von Hessen-Darmstadt, Schwester des Großherzogs, und ihre ganze Familie wurden am 17. Juli 1918 ermordet. Im Sommer 1918 kam es zu Luftangriffen auf Darmstadt. In der Novemberrevolution wurde Großherzog Ernst-Ludwig am 9. November 1918 vom Darmstädter Arbeiter- und Soldatenrat abgesetzt.
