Irwin Allen Ginsberg nació el 3 de junio de 1926 en Newark, Nueva Jersey. Tuvo el privilegio de ser el primogénito de una acomodada pareja de la burguesía judía. El padre era un consumado profesor de literatura y su madre, de origen ruso, una comprometida activista pro-comunista, que acostumbraba llevar a su hijo ca las reuniones del partido.
