The Taft family was not wealthy, living in a modest home in the suburb of Mount Auburn. Alphonso served as a judge and an ambassador, and was U.S. Secretary of War and Attorney General under President Ulysses S. Grant.

The neighborhood – upwind and high above downtown Cincinnati – was where upper-class residents lived. Six years later, William Howard Taft was born in the house – Alphonso and Louise Taft’s second child.
