The Mantle of Amélie of Orléans is a royal garment, part of the Portuguese Crown Jewels, that was fashioned for Queen Amélie of Portugal, consort of King Carlos I of Portugal. History [ edit ] The mantle was a gift of the city of Paris to the Queen upon her marriage to Carlos, Prince Royal of Portugal in 1886.
Princess Louise Françoise Marie Laure of Orléans (24 February 1882 – 18 April 1958) was a Princess of the Two-Sicilies and paternal great grandmother of King Felipe VI of Spain. Louise was the youngest daughter [1] of Philippe d'Orléans (1838–1894), Count of Paris and claimant to the French throne as " Philippe VII ".
Marie Louise d'Orléans was born at the Palais Royal in Paris. She was the eldest daughter of Philippe of France, Duke of Orléans and of his first wife, Princess Henrietta of England . [1] As a petite-fille de France she was entitled to the attribute of Royal Highness , although, as was customary at court at the palace of Versailles , her style, Mademoiselle d'Orléans , was more often used.
However, they again took refuge in England in 1886, when the French Republic exiled them following the wedding in Paris of Philippe's sister Amélie of Orléans to Crown Prince Carlos of Portugal. Returning therefore to France in 1871 with his parents, Philippe was educated at home at the Château d'Eu and at the Collège Stanislas de Paris . [1]
