Anna Maria war die älteste Tochter des Markgrafen Georg von Brandenburg-Ansbach (1484–1543) aus dessen zweiter Ehe mit Hedwig (1508–1531), Tochter des Herzogs Karls I. von Münsterberg. Anna Maria wurde im lutherischen Glauben erzogen. Sie heiratete am 24. Februar 1544 in Ansbach den nachmaligen Herzog Christoph von Württemberg (1515–1568).
Anna Maria was a daughter of the John George, Elector of Brandenburg (1525–1598), from his second marriage to Sabina of Brandenburg-Ansbach (1548–1575), daughter of the George, Margrave of Brandenburg-Ansbach. In 1580, she was engaged to Barnim X, Duke of Pomerania of Pomerania and on 8 January 1581, she married him in Berlin.
