Anna Eleonora, daughter of Ludwig V, Landgraf of Hesse-Darmstadt, married, in 1617, George, Duke of Brunswick-Lüneburg, and was grandmother of George I of England. It was for this reason that she appears amongst the group of eighty-eight miniature portraits of German and other families first recorded in Queen Carolines Closet at Kensington Palace.
