Lennard was created Earl of Sussex - Anne therefore becoming Countess of Sussex - a title that the Duchess of Cleveland had earmarked many years before. He was awarded a £2,000 annual pension and given a dowry of £20,000 for Anne. When the Duchess of Cleveland returned to Paris in 1676, Anne remained at court with her husband and father.
