On 14 December 1595, she was appointed by Queen Elizabeth I of England to the office of Keeper of Somerset House; a post which she held for life.

When she arrived, she took charge of managing the garrison including financing the food, supplies, and even the salaries of the senior officers, while her husband, Henry Carey, was out patrolling the Anglo-Scottish border.
