Anne Spencer, second daughter of the first Duke of Marlborough, became Countess of Sunderland after her marriage in 1700. She is noted for her great beauty and influence in politics, and between 1702 and 1712 she served as a Lady of the Bedchamber to Queen Anne.

All the portraits in the 'Windsor Beauties' series appear to be wholly by Lely’s own hand, except this portrait of Anne Digby, Countess of Sunderland which is probably a studio copy, after the original portrait at Althorp which is inscribed with the date 1666. Anne Digby was the daughter of George Digby, 2nd Earl of Bristol.

When Lady Anne Digby was born in 1646, in Somerset, Bristol, Massachusetts, United States, her father, George Digby, Second Earl of Bristol, was 34 and her mother, Lady Anne Russell, was 26. She married Robert Spencer 2nd Earl of Sunderland on 10 June 1665. They were the parents of at least 7 sons and 6 daughters.
