Campbell was the tenth Earl and the First Duke of Argyll and attempted to regain the lands his father had held firstly by courting the support of King James VII and then by becoming a champion of William and Mary, who restored his lands to him.
Archibald Campbell was born at Ham House, Surrey in June 1682, the second son of Archibald Campbell, 10th Earl of Argyll, and his wife Elizabeth Talmash. In 1701 the earldom was raised to a dukedom.
