He became the 5th Earl Angus at age fourteen and later earned the nickname ;'Bell the Cat.' He married Elizabeth Boyd, daughter of Robert Boyd, 1st Lord Boyd, Great Chamberlain of Scotland and Mariota Maxwell, on 4 March 1468.
