Archibald Hamilton, 9th Duke of Hamilton and 6th Duke of Brandon (15 July 1740 – 16 February 1819) was a Scottish peer and politician. Background and education. Hamilton Palace, Scotland. Archibald Hamilton was the eldest son of James, 5th Duke of Hamilton, by his third wife, Anne Spencer. His half-brother was James, 6th Duke, whose two sons (Archibald's nephews) James George and Douglas succeeded him as 7th and 8th Dukes, respectively. When Douglas Hamilton died without children, Archibald succeeded him as 9th Duke.

On 25 May 1765, he married Lady Harriet Stewart (a daughter of the 6th Earl of Galloway . Issue. Lady Anne Douglas-Hamilton (1766–1846) died unmarried but was lady-in-waiting to Queen Caroline.
The Hamilton Mausoleum was a pet project of Alexander, 10th Duke: another means to reflect the glory and eminence of the premier peers in Scotland. Started in 1842 and completed in 1858, the Mausoleum stands testament both to the power of the Hamilton legacy and to Alexander’s deep love of the classical world.
He left no sons and the title passed back to his uncle, the 6th Duke's brother, Archibald, 9th Duke of Hamilton. He was succeeded by his son Alexander, 10th Duke of Hamilton and then by his son William, 11th Duke of Hamilton.
