Arenenberg fue propiedad de familias nobles antes de que fuera vendida a Hortense de Beauharnais, la hija adoptiva y cuñada de Napoleón I. Ella lo reformó en estilo imperial francés y vivió allí desde 1817 con su hijo Luis Napoleón, el que más tarde sería el emperador Napoleón III, que según se cuenta hablaba, además del francés, el dialecto de Turgovia.
A landscape like a work of art presents itself to visitors when they come to the Arenenberg, which is steeped in history. On 9 May 1906, Empress Eugénie – wife of Napoléon III, last Emperor of France – donated the entire estate to the Canton of Thurgau.
