Nació en Dessau, hijo del duque Eduardo de Anhalt (1861-1918) y de la princesa Luisa Carlota de Sajonia-Altemburgo (1873-1953), la hija del príncipe Mauricio de Sajonia-Altemburgo. Sucedió a su padre como duque de Anhalt el 13 de septiembre de 1918. Pero debido a su minoría de edad, su tío el príncipe Ariberto de Anhalt fue elegido regente.
Ariberto fu così eletto reggente per il nipote, il quale comunque fu costretto ad abdicare il 12 novembre 1918.
