He is best known for the comic strip Little Nemo (1905–1914; 1924–1927) and the animated film Gertie the Dinosaur (1914). For contractual reasons, he worked under the pen name Silas on the comic strip Dream of the Rarebit Fiend .

Arthur was a radio operator within the GHQ Liaison Regiment, known as "Phantom", and worked within General Montgomery's HQ team from D Day plus 12 through to the German surrender at Luneberg Heath on 4th May 1945, a journey of 1,100 miles.
