Aubrey de Vere survived his father, but because his father declared him illegitimate, he was unable to inherit his father's title. No "suitable" claimant came forward, and one of the oldest titles in the peerage of England came to its end. Aubrey de Vere, 1st Earl of Oxford, received his title from the Empress Matilda in 1141.

His grave is near the monument to his kinsman Sir Francis Vere. He was born on 28th February 1627, the eldest son of Robert, 19th Earl and Beatrix van Hemmema and was brought up in Holland.
Aubrey de Vere (1627–1703) became the 20th and last Earl of Oxford in the Vere family. He died in 1703 without male issue, and his daughter Diana married Charles Beauclerk, 1st Duke of St. Albans, who was an illegitimate son of King Charles II by the actress Nell Gwyn .
