She was the third daughter and fifth child of the reigning British monarch, Queen Victoria, and her husband Prince Albert of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha.

Just over a month later – on 20th June – the baby was baptised in the Private Chapel at Windsor Castle, where she received the names Victoria Louise Sophia Augusta Amelia Helena; although she was officially known as Helena Victoria.
