The phrase baptism by fire or baptism of fire is a Christian theological concept originating from the words of John the Baptist in Matthew 3:11. It also has related meanings in military history and popular culture.

The phrase “baptism of fire” means a difficult and tough introduction to a new task, or job. It may be connected to the first experience of a newly recruited soldier of the real battlefield. As a person who starts a new job usually faces many obstacles.
There are some that believe the baptism of fire speaks about the Holy Ghost or Holy Spirit, and the Holy Spirit does work in us to convict us of sin, purify us, consecrate us, and strengthen us.
“In Matthew 3:11, John the Baptist said: ‘I indeed baptize you in water unto repentance: but he that cometh after me is mightier than I, whose shoes I am not worthy to bear: he shall baptize you in the Holy Spirit and in fire.’. A Christian brother recently identified this ‘fire’ with the outpouring of the Spirit on Pentecost.
