La basílica de Santa Maria del Popolo (del italiano: Basilica di Santa Maria del Popolo) es una basílica menor de Roma, situada en la Piazza del Popolo, junto a una de las antiguas puertas de la ciudad. Pertenece desde 1250 a los agustinos.

On 8 September 1716 the pope blessed a four feet long sword, adorned with the papal arms, that he sent as a gift to Prince Eugene of Savoy , the commander of the imperial army after the prince won the Battle of Petrovaradin against the Ottomans in the Austro–Turkish War .

Since its rebuilding in the 1470s by Pope Sixtus IV the Basilica of Santa Maria del Popolo was one of the favourite burial places for members of the papal aristocracy , clergy and literati.
Santa Maria del Popolo is one of the most significant buildings of the Roman Renaissance, not only for its architectural features, but also for the paintings and sculptures it houses. The church originates from a small chapel built by the will of Pope Pasquale II at the expense of the Roman people, from which it takes its name.
